AMD might have delayed RDNA 4 launch due to oversupply of RDNA 3 graphics cards

Rumor mill: Those looking forward to AMD's next-gen RDNA 4 desktop graphics cards might be waiting a little longer than anticipated – but they'll still be here before Nvidia's equivalent GeForce 5000 series. That's according to a new rumor that claims Team Red's rollout of its upcoming GPUs is being delayed because of all the unsold RDNA 3 cards.

There have been conflicting reports about when AMD will launch its RDNA 4-based graphics cards. Some say it will be toward to the end of this year, while others have pointed to a CES 2025 reveal and launch.

Prolific leaker Kepler is one of those who believes AMD will release its new cards at CES in January. Now, YouTube Channel Moore's Law is Dead is claiming a "Q1 2025 release," and the reasons why are quite interesting.

According to MLID, which cites an AMD partner and a major retailer, the RDNA 4 cards were supposed to release earlier but are actually being delayed. This is because of a "massive" oversupply problem with the current Navi 31-based cards, such as the RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 XTX, and RX 7900 GRE. The retailer source added that low-to-mid range RDNA 3 cards are selling "okay."

It's worth remembering that MLID doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to the accuracy of its claims. However, it's true that Navi 31 cards aren't exactly flying off the shelves. Looking at the latest Steam survey, the most popular model among participants is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX in 34th position.

Getting rid of the Navi 31 surplus before the release of RDNA 4 makes sense because the new cards offer much better price to performance – it'll be hard to sell an expensive RDNA 3 card when a cheaper RDNA 4 GPU is more powerful.

Nvidia is believed to be releasing its RTX 5080 and 5090 series at CES, keeping with its tradition of launching the high-end options first. With the RTX 5070 and others arriving later, AMD will likely have some time before RNDA 4's direct competition arrives.

In September, AMD confirmed that it will not be competing with Nvidia when it comes to the next generation of flagship graphics cards. A Team Red executive confirmed that releasing cards in the Radeon RX 8000 line to match Nvidia's top RTX 5000 GPUs won't be a priority. Instead, AMD will be focusing on its mid-range and lower-end products to increase the company's overall market share.

Yikes... so they can't even sell their mid-range/low-range cards while having 0 high-end options... at least their CPU division is going great... oh wait... Zen 5 isn't the hit we all assumed it'd be...
Yeah the company will go bankrupt soon /s 🙄

The same was true for 6000 series when 7000 series came out.
Remember how 7600, 7700 and 7800 series came out way later?? AMD had tons of 6000 stock left, so they only launched 7900 series in the beginning!

AMD probably also want to see how Nvidia are going to price the 5080 series cards.

Why? AMD will have nothing in that segment!
5080 is a high-end solution with a price tag of 1000-1200 dollars!
Best card in Radeon 8000 series will cost 500 dollars or so.

Because if Nvidia surprises everyone by low balling the decidely low spec 5080 ($800?) that will affect how AMD has to price their 8800 cards, given how the low 5080 price will affect the price of cards lower down the stack, the 5070 & 5060, which will most certainly be the 8800's competitors.

If Nvidias 5070 outperforms the 8800 by quite a margin, which it should, then AMD can't launch the 8800 at anything more than $500.

If however, the 5080 stays at $1000, that could give room for AMD to price the 8800 at $600.

In what world does 5080 have low spec tho?
5080 is going to perform around 4090 level.

I can guarrantee that you won't see 5080 for 800 dollars, not even on sale in 1 year from now.

699-799 dollars will be the MSRP of 5070 in Q2 next year and 5070 will be much faster than any 8800 series card!

The only way AMD can make a splash with RDNA4 will be if they launch FSR 4 with RDNA4 and locks out all other cards from using it and if they match DLSS or even beats it.

AMD will go the AI route with FSR 4 just like Nvidia did for years. AMD officially stated this. Will RDNA4 be the first gen to use FSR 4? It might!

RDNA 4 + FSR 4 = Perfect Marketing.

FSR in its current state is so bad that not even Sony wanted to use it and developed their own PSSR that beats it. AMD needs FSR 4 ASAP!

Really makes you think. They're gonna focus on the mid range but mid range sales suck. Hmmmm.......

Well, they say sales are "ok" which translates to suck. The high end isn't moving because who would invest in and high end of there will be nothing to replace it with in 4-6 years?

Everyone and their grandmother knows AMD GPUs are not selling well. Obviously AMD is not going to rush anything, when Radeon 8000 won't even compete with RTX 5000 series anyway.

Radeon 8000 will compete with RTX 4000 and Radeon 7000 series.
Best Radeon 8000 card might hit RTX 5060 performance if we are lucky!

Radeon 8000 needs to have aggressive pricing to gain marketshare and to make any sense at all really.

For 500-600 dollars, they need to deliver 7900GRE-7900XT performance.

And I would not be surprised if FSR 4 comes out with RDNA 4, with on-chip hardware requirements.

LOL why stop at the 5060, why not the 4060 or the 3050 6GB?

Using that "logic" the 5060 needs to be much faster than the 7800 XT, yet Nvidia is unlikely to make the 5060 much faster than the 4060, and the 4060 is barely half the speed of the 7800 XT.

Try better next time.

Try better? You make no sense.

OK I'll take it slow for you:

1. Your wishful thinking has the imaginary 8000 series being slower than an imaginary 5060.
2. Consensus seems that AMD will be competing at the middle end of the spectrum at $500, so like the 7800 XT.
3. The 4060 is barely more than half the speed of the 7800 XT.
4. So by your flawed logic, somehow the 5060 will be wildly faster than the 4060 and the 8800 XT will be... slower? Not much faster?

I'm marveling at the wishful thinking that goes into your claim, that's all.

You are grasping at straws.

Let me guess, you are looking to buy a Radeon 8000 SKU?

It all depends on reviews, it could be that this gen of GPUs end up being better value when the next gen arrives. Ie: data is what matters not rando opinions and guesses.
You provided nothing really.

There is nothing truly next gen about Radeon 8000 series, it will be a low to mid-end SKU release, made on TSMC 4N process, to keep prices down (3N is available but too expensive and would ruin the value aspect)

RDNA4 will be an absolutely forgettable release for people interrested in high-end GPUs, as there will be none. AMD won't even deliver a performance uplift compared to current RDNA3 7900 series GPUs, it will go backwards instead.

AMD: We want to gain market share.
Also AMD(?): We won't release new cards because there's too many old cards around still.

tip for AMD: It's the pricing that's preventing them from selling. If the price isn't right people don't buy it.

If they cannot understand that I don't seem them succeeding at their plan to increase market share.

They can't be selling at a loss you know! Then they might as well close their GPU department!

I hope AMD aims for 4080 speeds at half the price - could very well be the "go to card" over any 5060 card from Nvidia

Ah moving the goalposts. First you said R8000 wouldn't even match the 5060 and now it's matching the 7900, which is twice the speed of the 4060. Wow that 5060 is sure gonna be somethin'!

You know what backwards mean right?

Radeon 8000 will deliver 7900GRE performance and thats 4070 level of performance. Meaning current generations mid-end. Zero improvements will come with Radeon 8000 series.

You sure seem to care alot about 60 series tho. I presume your budget only allows you to buy in the 400 dollar range?

Assumptions again and weird "logic". AMD is leaving the top 5% of the market (again) to concentrate on the other 95%, something noted in this very article and everywhere in the tech press. If the 8800 XT is faster than the 7800 XT and sells for a better price to performance than previous gens and Nvidia comps, that is an improvement for 95% of the gaming public.

You brought up the 5060, I'm addressing your specific concerns. And here you project your personal assumptions on me again. You seem very invested in how other people live, I'm flattered but maybe try living for yourself instead.

Nah AMD is leaving high-end because they can't compete and that is about it. High-end AMD GPUs are not selling well for a reason.

I am living just fine thank you, I can buy whatever I want without complaining about high prices.

How low are you willing to go AMD? I would happily move my 6800XT into my living room PC (and finally put my 980Ti out of it's misery) if you offered me a 7900XTX at the right price...

FYI the 7900xtx is available at $899
7900xt for $659
7800xt for $469
and comes with 2 free games
as per PCPARTPICKER website.

However those 2 games will run better on Nvidia. Never get lured by a bundle when you buy hardware. You will be stuck with that hardware when the often boring games are done with.

If you take a look at most new games released recently, you will see that 7900XTX is closer to 4070 Ti SUPER than 4080 and Nvidia has superior features, because all these new games has RTX features like DLSS, DLAA, RT, Path Tracing, Reflex etc.

Examples:

Paying 899 dollars for 7900XTX this late in the generation seems like a straight up robbery.
750 dollars would be the correct price.

7900XT should cost no more than 600.

Both SKUs are going EOL real soon. AMD can't wait to kill them off due to low sales and zero margins.

Radeon 8000 will release in Q1 2025 and hopefully deliver 7900XT performance for 500-600 dollars, meaning 7900 series go EOL for sure.

Remember 5700XT? Made Radeon VII go EOL after like just a few months. Many people got tricked here. Sadly 5700XT had crashing issues, overheating VRMs and black screen issues for almost a year post release... That is AMD in a nutshell, rush out hardware and deal with software later.
